BOW WOW Wide Wale N-1 Deck Jacket

The N-1 Deck Jacket was developed by the US Navy during the Second World War for sailors working in cold, exposed conditions at sea. The original combined a tightly woven outer shell with a heavy insulating lining and distinctive pile collar, creating a practical jacket capable of protecting deck crews against wind and cold.

BOW WOW takes the familiar N-1 silhouette in a different direction. The traditional lining has been removed, transforming what was originally a cold weather jacket into a more versatile layer for everyday wear. In its place, much of the character comes from the wide wale cotton fabric, whose pronounced ridges give the military pattern a substantial texture associated with vintage corded fabrics. The collar retains the warmth and tactile contrast of the original design through a blend of wool and alpaca.

The jacket is finished to reproduce the irregular fading of a vintage piece that has spent years being worn and exposed to sunlight. Colour variation across the body, seams and raised areas works particularly well with the wide wale texture, creating depth before the jacket has even been worn. Rather than reproducing an N-1 exactly, BOW WOW uses its military origins as the foundation for a jacket with its own fabric, weight and ageing character.
